Effectiveness of a commercial PROBIOTIC for water and sludge management on an inland shrimp aquaculture farm in Thailand

    Supervisor: Dr. M. Flaherty

    ABSTRACT

Shrimp aquaculture, particularly the culture of Penaeus monodon (black-tiger shrimp), has expanded rapidly throughout Asia in recent decades. Thailand has emerged as the world?s leading producer, placing it at the forefront of a competitive international market that currently gives high value to seafood products. In order to meet this intense demand, new technologies are continually being developed and new farms are being established in areas not previously used for aquaculture.

Use of probiotics, reservoirs and greenwater in shrimp ponds

Shrimp farmers will benefit from the latest technology adaptation  undertaken by the Philippine Council for Aquatic and Marine Research and Development (PCAMRD)

By using probiotics, reservoir and greenwater in shrimp ponds, the number of luminous bacterical count may be lowered down to negligible levels resulting to an increased harvest of three to four tons per hectare with a stocking rate of 20-25 PLs per hectare.

Use of Probiotics In Super-Intensive shrimp growth system

Oceanic Institute Research Associate Clete Otoshi re-cently attended the Sixth International Conference on Recirculating Aquaculture hosted by Virginia Tech at The Hotel Roanoke Confer-ence Center. On behalf of OI’s shrimp department, Otoshi presented a paper titled “Super-intensive growout of the Pacifc white shrimp,

Litopenaeus vannamei: Recent advances at the Oceanic Institute.”

Otoshi’s presentation addressed problems such as disease and environmental issues that continue to plague traditional shrimp farmers.

GENERAL INFORMATION

WHAT IS BETA GLUCAN?

Beta glucan is a complex carbohydrate or biopolymer of glucose, a simple sugar.

It is derived from several sources, including yeast, bacteria, fungi and cereals, such as oats, barley and rye. Each type of beta glucan has a unique structure in which glucose is linked together in different ways, giving them physical properties.

For example, beta 1,3 glucan derived from bacteria and algae is linear, making it useful as a food thickener. Yeast beta glucan is branched with ?,6 and ?,3 glucans, enhancing its ability to bind and stimulate macrophages. The chemical structure of beta 1,3- glucan is dependent on the source and, based on extensive published research, it is widely accepted that the beta 1,3-glucan purified from baker's yeast (Saccharomyces cerevisiae) is the most potent anti-infective beta-glucan immunomodulator . Yeast-derived beta 1,3-glucans work, in part, by stimulating the innate anti-fungal immune mechanisms to fight a range of foreign challenges.

WHAT IS MANNAN OLIGOSACCHARIDES (MOS)

Department of Animal Nutrition and Nutritional Diseases, Faculty of Veterinary Medicine, K›r›kkale University, 71450 K›r›kkale - TURKEY

Oligosaccharides, including fructo oligosaccharides, galacto oligosaccharides, transgalacto oligosaccharides, and mannan oligosaccharide (MOSs), are one of the most extensively investigated classes of antibiotic alternatives . MOSs, which are derived from the cell wall of Saccharomyces cerevisiae, have shown promising effects, such as decreasing pathogenic microflora of the gut, stimulating a strong immune response, and elevating the strength of the intestinal mucosa in studies with poultry. By balancing the intestinal environment and stimulating the immune response, MOSs have been shown to increase growth in broilers, turkeys, and swine.
